Surgical Illustration: Cervical Spinal Decompression and Fusion

ABOUT During our studies, we were fortunate enough to be able to observe live surgeries. This illustration is a result of those observations, as well as many, many iterations. The procedure depicted is a fairly common one, where vertebral arches are removed to release pressure on the spinal cord, and the remnants are immobilized with rods. This piece went on to win an Award of Merit at the 2016 AMI Salon

PROCESS Rough sketches to determine sequence, followed by creating 3D maquettes of surgical tools in C4D as references, then refining the final story in photoshop before tackling the finalized pen and ink render.
